Hunnicutt Family Genealogy

Early Hunnicutts in the New World:

  • William Huncote, b 1600, who immigrated from England to Surry County, VA in 1635 aboard the "Assurance" is likely the father of Augustine (below). Did William change his name from Huncote to Hunnicutt after arriving in Virginia?
  • Augustine Hunnicutt, b ca 1630 in England, d 1683 in Surry County, VA. Married Mary Alice Parke 1663.  Children: John, Augustine Jr, Robert, and Katherine.
  • John Hunnicutt, son of Augustine, b ca 1650, d 1699 in Surry County, VA. In 1671 he married Elizabeth Warren daughter of Thomas Warren and his second wife, Elizabeth Spencer Sheppard.  Thomas Warren's home is still standing. Called the Smith's Fort Plantation, Ft Smith or the Rolfe/Warren House, of Surry Country, VA, and is the oldest brick building in VA, built in 1652.   John took part in the 1676 Bacon's Rebellion, a Virginia uprising against the Colonial government. They had at least four children: Robert, Augustine, John Jr., and William.  There are conflicting records showing other children: Thomas and  Katherine.
  • Robert Hunnicutt, son of John, b 1675, d ca 1752.   Married Margaret Wyke, had 8 children: Huldah, William, Wyke, Peter, Robert, Margaret, Mary, and John.
  • Augustine Hunnicutt, son of John, b ca 1677, d 1743 in Surry County, VA.   Married Phoebe Crews.  Children: Robert, John, Augustine, Mary and Martha.
  • William Hunnicutt, son of Robert, b ca 1700, d ca 1769 in Prince George Co, VA.  Married Mariam ?.  Children: Jesse, Robert, Thomas, Miriam and Ann.  The children are listed with the last name of "Honeycutt."
  • John Hunnicutt, son of Augustine, b 1716. Received a land grant in NC in 1762.
  • Randolph Hunnicutt, b 1747 in Surry County VA, d 1833/34, Anderson County SC. He bought land in Cumberland County, NC in 1773, was granted land in SC in 1792.
  • James Hunnicutt, b 1785 in Pendleton District, SC, d 1854 in Rabun County, GA.

Some of this information may not be completely accurate because of the sketchy records from the time.  Also, Augustine, Robert and John seemed to be very popular names so there's more confusion with reading the records.  For instance, there were three John Hunnicutts with families listed in the 1850 Pickens Co, SC census.   Some of the direct descendants changed to the Honeycutt spelling.

Some sources say the name may have derived from the Leicester, England family name of Huncote or Huncoat  ("cote" is a shed or coop for animals in Old English so literally, a Huns' shed).  However, there is a small village of Huncote SW of Leicester in Leicestershire County.  Perhaps the Hunnicutts came from there?   There's also a town of Huncoat near Blackburn, England.

Variations on the name:  Honneycutt, Honeycut, Honneycut, Huneycutt, Hunneycutt, Huneycut, Hunneycut, Honicutt, Honnicutt, Honicut, Honnicut, Hunicutt, Hunnicutt, Hunicut, Hunnicut.

Much of the information for this page was compiled by Mrs. Doyle Lahoma Hunnicutt of TX, published 1967.
